JANUARY 17, 2006
Riddle me this...
What goes up, but at the same time goes down,
up to the sky and down to the ground,
my present tense and my past tense too,
let's go for a ride, just me and you?
(Scroll down for the answer.)

Trends: Candles and Personal Care
Here's an idea that could make some scents... How about offering your favorite customer things that smell swell? Consider that she will come to you searching for items that look pretty in her home and garden. It's not a reach to think that, once she's done homing and gardening, she also would appreciate items that help her feel better for the effort. The garden center shelf — or, more emphatically, the P-O-P area — is ideal for carrying personal care products. These range from aromatherapy supplies (read: candles) to lotions, from therapeutic bubble bath formulas to microwaveable wraps that sooth and comfort. This is, indeed, a booming niche for garden centers looking for that "something special."

One company that does a little bit of everything special in this realm is Nature's Garden, which offers candles, soaps, bath supplies, cosmetic supplies and more. Another great resource is Nature's Gift, which has products and information about the benefits of using them. I also recommend Froogle's online store, which supplies a variety of gardening-specific products that smell and feel great.

You might already dabble in candles and the like. If so, we would like to here about it. Please share your comments in our blog. And, by all means, please read on to find out about other scents-ible... er, sensible... garden goodies.
