	January 22, 2008 Riddle me this... Imagine you are in a sinking boat and surrounded by sharks. How do you survive? (Scroll down for the answer.) Trends: Birding Friends with fine feathers... The other day, as I drove on the outskirts of town, I peered out the passenger window — and found myself in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. If there was one bird sunbathing in the pasture in question, there were 1,000. It was probably closer to 10,000. I have never seen so many birds in one setting, sitting. Or perching. Whatever. To be honest, I’m not much of a bird guy, save for on Thanksgiving, but that’s a different E-Zone altogether. Anyway, when I approached this makeshift landing strip, the movement of the car or the noise of the engine set into motion an incredible ballet. Instantly, scores of flapping wings lifted the living blanket off the grass and into the air — gracefully, purposefully. I was amazed that in all the haste, there was no waste. Not a single bird collided. Each veered one way and then another — as if this synchronized swim through the blue expanse had been charted and rehearsed … and not just another instance of another day spent seeking respite from the likes of me and my noisy car. I haven’t been awed often lately. But I was that afternoon. I write all that to introduce you to a birding Web site I stumbled onto by accident earlier this week. Yes, it’s about birds. And, yes, it’s pretty awesome, if simply for the magnitude of information and for the obvious passion involved in putting it together. As I noted earlier, I’ve never been much of bird person.
