Riddle me this... The number of lilies in a pond doubles every day. So, on the first day of the month there is one lily. On the second day, two lilies. Then the next day four lilies, then eight, 16, 32, etc. If the pond is full on the 30th day of the month, what day is it half full?

Contained enthusiasm... This go-round, I'm going to urge you to think inside the box.

As we spend the next couple of e-Zones focusing on items you might want to sell this Spring, we want to start with a ditty that's known, depending upon your perspective, as "the EarthBox" or as "the Next Big Thing." Perhaps it's both.

For synopsis purposes, we'll tell you that the patented EarthBox was developed by commercial farmers and tested in the lab and on the farm. The maintenance-free, award-winning, high-tech growing system has been designed to control soil conditions, to eliminate guesswork and to more-than-double the yield of a conventional garden — with less fertilizer, less water and virtually no effort.

The "what's more" part is that the EarthBox is a veritable wonder of nature. Acting on the laws of science, the EarthBox facilitates the movement of nutrients from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. When it is set up, a fertilizer stripe is placed on top of the potting mix — creating an area of high nutrient concentration. At this time, the potting mix around the roots of the growing plant has no fertilizer. When water is added, the moist potting mix slowly conducts the diluted nutrients down the concentration gradient to the plant roots, which absorb optimal amounts of nutrients at any given time.

That might be more science than one would want to endure in a virtual product report. Just know this: In addition to being cleverly conceived and smartly packaged, EarthBox is considered a boon to sustainability, thus earning it bonus points with today's shopper. You know her; she's the person who just approached the checkout stand and asked you if you have a cool, new product to recommend.
