Riddle me this... There is a seven-letter word in the English language that contains 10 words without rearranging any of its letters. What is the word?
(Scroll down for the answer.)

Trends: Meeting needs
Here today, gone tomorrow?... I began my career where most people in journalism begin their careers, in the newsroom of a daily newspaper. The Wichita Falls Record News was its name; covering North Texas happenings was its game. Actually, covering games was my game. I was a sportswriter whose "beat" included local high school sports, local college sports and all sports that didn't fall under either of those aforementioned umbrellas. In other words, if a sport occurred in/near Wichita Falls, I was entrusted with relaying the right score and most of the particulars when I recapped the event for our daily readers, who, presumably, lived for the sound of the "thud" that marked the arrival of their paper every morning, just so they could read what Yale Youngblood wrote.

Of course, had Yale Youngblood written sentences that contained 60 words in the Wichita Falls Record News (as was the case in the sentence prior), his career might not have lasted very long. Our quest, the editor said over and over, was to get in, tell what happened, and get out. Also, getting it right ranked fairly high during annual employee evaluations, as I recall.

Speaking of the word "recall," that soon will be how many of you associate with the newspaper. You will recall what it was, what it did, what it meant. You'll have to recall, because you won't have any empirical evidence that it existed — unless, of course, you happen to collect used newsprint for a hobby. Oh, certainly, there will be some incarnation of the newspaper when the last press finally stops rolling — many of you already read news online regularly. But you won't have a newspaper to take with you to address another regularity issue because, like the dinosaur, the news "paper" is about to become extinct.

For what it's worth, that's not just me talking — national newspaper circulation numbers have been falling precipitously since the 1990s, when the internet gave readers a new/broader/better option for news. I recently read — online! — that the newspaper soon will have company in the memory banks. An article on Entrepreneur.com, the internet arm of Entrepreneur magazine, noted 10 businesses destined for death. Thankfully, garden center operation isn't listed. But it might be worth noting that each of the "Doomed Dozen Minus Two" were or will be phased out because of technological advances that tend to serve customer needs better than the existing product or service. Ultimately, every business that doesn't proactively address the prospect of change could be in trouble, including ours.

I might have read that in the newspaper. Then, again, I might not have. Now, I guess, it doesn't matter.

Puzzling pictures
Select company... One of the images shown here is a puzzle. The other two are but weak facsimiles, lame attempts to replicate what a real puzzle should look like. Indeed, they have little reason for being, aside from the fact that we need three pictures to make this bit work. We implore you to select the one that is the puzzle, and to put the product together again. OK, "implore" might be a little strong. How about "beg?"
