Trends: Apparel
Nice Plants (and pants) ... This go-round we pay homage to garden center operators and manufacturers who have turned homewear into a bona fide fashion trend. From the gloves you put on your hands to the veritable shoe store of footwear, apparel is fast becoming a hot niche item. Just ask my wife ... (stepping down steps, yelling to darling Mrs. Y, "Hey, is apparel fast becoming a hot niche item for the garden center industry?" "Sure is," she says as she sashays around Youngblood manor in an outfit that will, by day's end, oversee digging, forking, spreading, shaking ... while looking good all the while.)

If we've seen any significant "trending" in this area, it probably has to do with footwear. Initially, there was the garden clog, which begat a series of colorful gardening clogs, which begat clogs with or without strap heels, and with or without holes in them. At the recent National Lawn & Garden Show and PA Green Expo, we also saw several varieties of heavy-duty shoes that are crafted to dig into grass for mowing and the like.

We also saw more than a few attractive, functional brimmed hats, which can extend a gardener's time in the yard significantly. Given that your customer is firmly entrenched in her garden for the foreseeable future, I would recommend that you explore apparel options at the trade shows and in a fine publication called GCP&S. Or you could simply drive around town and see what the well-dressed gardener is wearing.
