Valent sells Orthene line
Valent U.S.A. Corp. sold its Orthene insecticide product line to AMVAC Chemical Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of American Vanguard Corp. The sale is expected to close by mid-January. Under the agreement, AMVAC will take ownership of the assets of the Orthene product line including all registrations, formulations and existing inventories of the ag and professional product lines. In December, AMVAC acquired the pentachloronitrobenzene fungicide product line (Turfcide and Terraclor brands) from Chemtura Corp.

Bell Nursery acquires majority stake in Virginia Growers
Bell Nursery, based in Burtonsville, Md., acquired majority interest in Virginia Growers in Montpelier, Va. Virginia Growers was founded in 1985 by Neil Van Wingerden and has been owned and operated by Jonathan and Andy Van Wingerden and Brett Guthrie. The operation has more than 12 acres of outdoor production space and 325,000 square feet of greenhouse space. Bell Nursery acquired Ulery Greenhouse Co. in Springfield, Ohio, in November. Bell supplies plants to Home Depot and other retailers in the Mid-Atlantic region, Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, Ohio.

McGregor offers organic herb cuttings
McGregor Plant Sales is now selling USDA-certified organic unrooted herb cuttings to U.S. and Canadian growers. The cuttings are produced by Florexpo in Costa Rica. A Costa Rican auditor was invited to inspect the Florexpo facility and granted certification in September 2007. Florexpo's organic production requires absolutely zero procurement of pest control or fertilization chemicals.

Growers should avoid the same problems in 2008
Crop timing problems, too-tall or too-short plants, and disease and insect outbreaks tend to occur in the same greenhouses year after year. Mich. St. Univ. Ext.'s Dean Krauskopf advised growers to take a few minutes to look back at previous years and ask: "Why do things recur in the same houses?" Causes include low light, inadequate or poorly designed heating systems, infested soil, poor air movement and ventilation, drips and badly designed irrigation systems. During the frenzy of spring production and shipping, it's easy to forget what's happened before. Now is the time to look for a pattern, determine the cause and resolve problems.

FPO to hit the 'air' waves in February
An interview with Flower Promotion Organization exec. director Stan Pohmer will be broadcast on 129,000 American Airlines flights during February. The interview will also be mentioned in the Feb. issue of the airlines' In Flight magazine and a link will be on American's Web site to the FPO Web site for 12 months. In the interview, Pohmer provides background info on FPO and its goals. A major part of the interview focuses on promoting the benefits of flowers as identified in a Harvard study conducted by professor Nancy Etcoff.
