Florida: Growers cannot ship infested plants Univ. of Fla. entomologist Lance Osborne is advising Florida's growers that they need to stay on top of insect infestations. He reports 1 nursery has been "regulated" because of whitefly problems identified by Fla. Dept. of Ag and Consumer Services. Osborne said this has to do with plant quality being impacted and it is not a biotype-related issue. He said nurseries will be prevented from shipping plants by FDACS, if the plants are infested with any pest that is reducing quality, until the problem is rectified.

Spider mites thrive in hot, dry conditions Twospotted spider mites will develop in hot, dry areas of greenhouses, especially where there are no rollup sides to help moderate temperatures, reports Leanne Pundt, Univ. of Conn. ext. hort. and greenhouse IPM specialist. Twospotted spider mites have a wide host range and can feed on hundreds of plants. Pundt said to scout the underside of the oldest leaves along the midveins for the mobile mites, eggs and white empty eggshells. There may also be faint stippling or chlorotic growth that resembles nitrogen deficiency.
