New azide-based pest products to be developed Gowan Co. entered into a licensing agreement with American Pacific Corp. to develop and market azide-based pest management products. Gowan will be the exclusive worldwide marketing and sales provider of all products developed under this agreement. Certain azide-based products developed by American Pacific and Auburn Univ. have been found to be highly effective in controlling soil-borne weeds, nematodes, fungi and bacteria in trials on cut flowers, food crops and turf. A new formulation under development is applied as a pre-plant pesticide using either drip irrigation or traditional soil incorporation methods.
Rainy weather favors parasitic nematodes Abundant spring rainfall in the Northeast favored development of foliar nematodes, reports Leanne Pundt, Univ. of Conn. ext. hort. and greenhouse IPM specialist. Parasitic nematodes need a film of water to move across plant surfaces. Numerous perennials and annuals are hosts of strawberry leaf nematode. Initially the nematodes feed on the outside of leaves and then enter plants through stomata and begin feeding there. Once inside, nematodes complete their life cycle in as little as 2 weeks. Populations can become high before symptoms are evident. Symptoms include curling, stunting and twisting of new growth. Once feeding occurs in leaves, leaves turn pale green, then yellow and later brown.
