IR-4 survey needs grower input
IR-4 Ornamental Hort. Program is seeking input from growers on diseases, insects and weeds. The online survey will help ensure research is focused on the pests causing the most problems. The survey will run through August. Anyone can submit a research request by completing a Project Clearance Request form. The requests are prioritized yearly at the IR-4 Ornamental Hort. Workshop. This year's workshop is Oct. 10-12 in Denver.

Senate rejects estate, minimum wage bill
A failed bill combining an estate tax cut with a boost in the federal minimum wage, an election-year combination engineered by Republicans, may see another vote this fall. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said the GOP will not split the minimum wage apart from the estate tax, and that future votes on the pay increase will be linked to cutting taxes on multimillion-dollar estates.

Container trial to feature 2,000-plus cultivars
Sawaya Research Gardens in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, will hold an extensive field trial of seed and vegetative annuals and perennials on Aug. 16. Floriculture consultant Mel Sawaya said more than 2,000 varieties will be displayed, including a complete geranium, calibrachoa and osteospermum trial. The trial looks at plant performance, tolerance to extreme heat and cold and cultivar comparison.

SePro to offer Camelot
SePro Corp. will now market and sell Camelot fungicide/bactericide as part of its portfolio for the ornamental market. Camelot (active ingredient 58% copper salts of fatty and rosin acids) will continue to be formulated as an emulsifiable liquid.

Sakata schedules pansy trials
Sakata Seed will conduct pansy trials this fall at 3 sites. Each site will provide a regionalized evaluation of Sakata genetics to include a full comparison trial. Trial sites are: Sakata, Salinas, Calif., Oct. 4-6; Metrolina Greenhouses, Huntersville, N.C., Oct. 26; and Powell Plant Farms, Troupe, Texas, Dec. 13.
