Texas specialty cut growers fill local niche The front page of the Aug. 5 Fort Worth Star-Telegram Work & Money section showed Amanda Muller harvesting sunflowers at her Paradise Specialty Cut Flowers of Texas operation. Even though 2/3 of cut flowers bought are imported, Texans are proving there is a market for locally grown specialty cuts. Judy Laushman, director of Assoc. of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, said independent growers are gradually increasing. Laushman said more growers are moving to direct selling to either farmers markets or direct to retail.
Nasdaq delists Hines On Aug. 6, Hines Hort. received notification from Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. that the company's securities had been delisted and, as of Aug. 8, its shares would no longer be traded on Nasdaq. This action was the result of previous Nasdaq determinations that the company had not filed its quarterly report for the quarter ended March 31, 2007, and that Hines failed to maintain the minimum stockholders' equity requirement for continued listing. Hines had previously received a letter from Nasdaq indicating it was not in compliance with the minimum bid price requirement for continued listing. Hines has until Jan. 22, 2008, to regain compliance with this minimum bid price rule.

New England: Watch out for leafhoppers New England growers of outdoor perennials and garden mums should be on the lookout for potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae) and aster leafhopper (Macrosteles quadrillineatus). The potato leafhopper injects a toxin as it feeds so leaves may develop a V-shaped brown edge burn at the tip. This injury may be confused with leaf scorch, especially on drought-sensitive astilbe. Plants may also be stunted with distorted new growth. The aster leafhopper transmits the pathogen that causes aster yellows.
