Ag. groups support immigration rally in D.C. Ag. Coalition for Immigration Reform, of which Society of American Florists is a member, United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Assoc. and Nat'l. Council for Ag. Employers are urging members to join in the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Rally on Capitol Hill, Sept. 13 in Washington, D.C. Representatives of the 3 organizations will visit members of Congress to stress the need for a viable guest-worker program. Rally organizers are concerned that much of the discussion of the recent immigration field hearings has focused on border security and failed to address securing a legal and stable ag. work force.
Hines Hort. to sell inventory, properties The board of directors of Hines Hort., headquartered in Irvine, Calif., approved the company's plan to sell its Northeast production facilities in Danville, Pa., Pipersville, Pa., Utica, N.Y., and Newark, N.Y., along with certain assets in Miami. As part of its disposition of its Miami assets, the company will cease all production in the Miami area. For the 2nd quarter of 2006 Hines reported net sales of $154.9 million, down 12.4% from $176.9 million for the 2nd quarter a year ago. Delayed product availability, poor product sell-through and lost market share were cited as reasons for the decline.
Watch for mites on poinsettias Univ. of Md. co-op. ext. entomologist Stanton Gill advises poinsettia growers to be on the lookout for spider mites and Lewis mites. He said IPM scouts usually find these 2 pests on poinsettias in September. However, he expects these mites will show up sooner because of the recent hot, dry weather in many parts of the country.

Athens Select names Ouellet exec. director Athens Select Marketing Assoc. board of directors appointed Kerstin Ouellet as the organization's 1st exec. director. Ouellet is president of Pen & Petal, a marketing and communications company for the green industry. Since the association's inception in 1999, Ouellet had been handling its marketing efforts. The Athens Select program is a collection of heat- and humidity-tolerant plants selected by Univ. of Ga. hort. professor Allan Armitage.
