Fernlea abandons New York expansion plans Fernlea Flowers, headquartered in Delhi, Ontario, Canada, has abandoned its plans to build a greenhouse operation on 103 acres it owns in Coxsackie, N.Y. -- again. The company already has facilities in Pennsylvania and Florida. According to the Daily Freeman, the company has cancelled plans at least twice before to develop the site. Fernlea pres. Jeff Howe told the Daily Freeman that a new greenhouse at this time didn't make sense because there were numerous greenhouses for sale throughout the Northeast.
Poinsettia program expected to save on shipping costs Interstate Transport in St. Petersburg, Fla., has tailored a program for companies that ship poinsettias and Christmas live goods. The program provides free truckload routing, load optimization and online tracking. It's expected to save growers 10%-15% in total shipping costs, said Sean Storr, Interstate Transport dir. of sales. Interstate will also provide guaranteed just-in-time delivery to any location in the U.S.
FPO to offer retail kits Flower Promotion Organization has developed a kit to help retailers leverage the successful flower recipe program featured on its Web site. Each kit contains 2 CDs that feature: a video on how to use Web site content; a preview of upcoming podcasts; customizable seasonal newsletter templates to use to communicate with customers; seasonal flower recipe handouts; and a template for hosting workshops.
Yoder shows off new plants at field days Yoder Brothers breeder Mark Smith will be discussing garden mum and aster introductions at the company's Fall Field Days, scheduled for Sept. 20 at Yoder Canada, Leamington, Ontario, Canada; Sept. 26, Lucas Greenhouses, Monroeville, N.J.; and Sept. 28, Yoder Brothers, Pendleton, S.C. Visitors will be able to tour field trials at each event.
Capsicum could become cut alternative Researchers at USDA's Beltsville Ag. Research Center are developing varieties of Capsicum for use as cut flowers. Plant geneticists Rob Griesbach and John Stommel have been working with PanAmerican Seed and McCorkle Nurseries to develop and trial varieties. Selections are based on growth habit, height, leaf size, leaf shape, leaf color, fruit shape, fruit color, fruit size and fruit position. The geneticists are able to breed many combinations by manipulating the diverse Capsicum genome, Griesbach said. Researchers are looking for input from growers about what qualities they'd like to see in cut peppers.
