Walters Gardens receives alternative energy grant
Walters Gardens, a perennial breeder and propagator in Zeeland, Mich., received an alternative energy grant of $87,750 from the Ag. Innovation Fund. The company will use the funds to purchase pollution-control equipment to use in conjunction with its biomass burner. The new equipment will allow Walters to burn corn and wood pellets more efficiently. The grant will also allow for future testing of other alternative fuels. The biomass burner gives the company a choice of fuels it can use to heat greenhouses and reduces its reliance on natural gas.

The general conclusion at a symposium last month in Amsterdam, Netherlands, sponsored by Int'l. The society reported that legislation and wise use make it possible to use the huge amount of peat reserves available. The society said this should be a relief to growers who depend on peat as a component of growing media and also for people who are involved in the peat industry.
