FNGLA announces 2007 Plants of the Year For 2007, Fla. Nursery, Growers & Landscape Assoc. designated 5 plants as Florida Plants of the Year: Dracaena deremensis 'Limelight,' Cyrtomium falcatum (holly fern), Zamia maritima formerly Z. furfuracea, (cardboard palm), Galphimia gracilis (shower-of-gold) and Eragrostis spectabilis (purple lovegrass). The program links growers with consumers by designating plants that do well in the state's 3 geographic regions.
Breeder Kees Sahin dies Dutch plant breeder and seedsman Kees Sahin died Sept. 9 after a prolonged illness. He was 62. He was born Zelimir Kornelije Tvrtkovic-Sahin in Sarajevo in the former Yugoslavia. He simplified his name to Kees Sahin after moving to the Netherlands. In 1982 he set up K. Sahin, Zaden B. V. with his wife Elisabeth, a botanist. Sahin breeding programs covered many genera, creating award-winning plants, including Achillea millefolium 'Summer Pastels,' the first F¹-hybrid 'Centurion Sky Blue' delphinium, 'Lady in Red' salvia, 'Peaches and Cream' verbena and Viola 'Floral Power Orange Red Wing.'
Floragem wins Home Depot award Floragem, a marketing group made up of wholesale growers, received Home Depot's 2006 Product Innovation Award for its Viva! SunPatiens. SunPatiens impatiens are bred by Sakata Seed America and grown by Ecke Ranch. The brand was introduced in 2006 exclusively to Home Depot stores with 4 colors: Orange, White, Purple and Red. For 2007, 2 new members -- Vigorous Lavender and Spreading Salmon Variegated -- will be available. Plants are sold in a color pot including care information and a planting guide.
Planting Stories to provide PR Planting Stories in Haarlem, Netherlands, is a new public relations business set up to provide a communications link between horticultural suppliers and industry media. The business offers an info distribution service to trade and consumer media sectors across the U.S., Canada and Europe. Company founder Miriam Young was formerly responsible for marketing at Dutch perennial exporter Darwin Plants.
