Golden Japanese forest grass named Plant of the Year
Perennial Plant Assoc. named Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola' (golden Japanese forest grass) as its 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year. This clump-forming deciduous grass produces arching, linear leaves that are bright yellow with narrow, longitudinal lime-green stripes. The leaves often develop a reddish tinge in fall. Plants reach 12-18 inches tall and 18-36 inches wide. It is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9. Geranium 'Rozanne' is the 2008 Perennial Plant of the Year.

Valent sells Orthene insecticide line to AMVAC
AMVAC Chemical Corp. acquired Valent's Orthene insecticide product line. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. AMVAC will take ownership of the assets of the Valent Orthene product line including all registrations, formulations and existing inventories of the ag and professional product lines, including: Orthene 75 S Insecticide; Orthene 75 S WSP Insecticide; Orthene 90 S Insecticide; Orthene 97 Insecticide; Orthene PCO Pellets Insecticide; Orthene Turf, Tree & Ornamental Spray Insecticide; and Orthene Turf, Tree & Ornamental Spray 97 Insecticide.

Society identifies top rhodies for regions
American Rhododendron Society named its 28 top azaleas and rhodies for 2008. The plants are selected for 7 regions. The selections are made from the society's Proven Performers lists and tested in ARS members' gardens. Awards are given in 4 categories: Elepidotes, lepidotes, evergreen azalea and deciduous azalea. Canada adds ninebark to SOD list
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency added Physocarpus (ninebark) to its list of plant genera regulated for Phytophthora ramorum. The agency also amended the P. ramorum compensation regulations to remove the requirement to first consider payments made under the Canadian Agriculture Income Stabilization (CAIS) or the new AgriStability program before making payment to an applicant.

USDA expands fire ant quarantine
The entire state of South Carolina is now designated as a quarantine area for fire ants. Interstate movement of regulated articles from the state is now restricted.
