Conn. growers to phase out porcelainberry
Conn. Invasive Plant Council agreed to let the state's growers stop sales and production of Ampelopsis brevipedunculata (porcelainberry) instead of passing a law to ban the plant. The council's about-face allows the green industry to self-regulate for a year. "It's a new era of cooperation between the green industry and the invasive plant movement," said Bob Heffernan, exec. sec. at Conn. Nursery and Landscape Assoc. "Our industry is committed to toe the line on this." If this approach is successful, it will be a model for other plant bans. The council is likely to ban 10-15 more plants during the next few years, he said.
N.J. proposes spray program for gypsy moths
N.J. Dept. of Ag. is proposing treatment on 112,500 acres of forested land to suppress an expected heavy infestation of gypsy moth caterpillars in May and June. The department announced a proposed spray program in about 100 municipalities and agencies in 17 counties. Of the 112,500 acres proposed for treatment, more than 87,000 acres would require 2nd treatments. The overall cost of the program is estimated at $9 million. "The devastation caused by gypsy moth caterpillars in 2007 was apparent last summer, with vast stands of trees left bare and weakened," said secretary of ag. Charles M. Kuperus. Last year's defoliation resulted in the death of as many as 14,000 acres of trees due to consecutive defoliation by gypsy moth caterpillars.
News on the emerald ash borer front
• WISCONSIN. Officials plan to survey 44 counties this winter for signs of emerald ash borer. Mick Skwarok, a plant pest and disease specialist with Wis. Dept. of Ag., Trade and Consumer Protection, said no reports of the emerald ash borer have been confirmed in Wisconsin so far. But he said it's reasonable to assume the beetle is in Wisconsin, given the state's proximity to known areas of infestation in Illinois.
• ONTARIO. EAB has now been found in Toronto. Canadian Food Inspection Agency said the beetle was detected in the city's northeast end and appears contained to about 100 trees. The agency imposed a quarantine in the area.
• ILLINOIS. Skokie plans to remove 225 of about 3,000 ash trees inspected by forestry officials since the discovery of EAB in some of the trees last spring, village officials told Chicago Tribune. Tree removals will take place between now and April. The trees were slated for removal either because they had shown evidence of infestation or because they were in poor condition.

Tenn. nursery installs green roof at Clinton Library
GroWild Nursery in Fairview, Tenn., was selected to install a green roof at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Ark. "We got the job because we had done green roofs before, and the green-roof technology is so new that once you've done one, you're considered a veteran," nursery co-owner Mike Berkley said. The green roof is actually a part of a private penthouse residence on top of the library and was recently featured on C-Span. While the project required GroWild to finish last November, many of the plants are dormant through winter, and the new green roof should be growing this spring.
