2 species added to P. ramorum watch list
APHIS added 2 new species for Phytophthora ramorum regulation after the hosts were found naturally infected with P. ramorum outside of the U.S. Corylopsis spicata and Physocarpus opulifolius were added to the regulation list to control the artificial spread of this disease. In addition, APHIS is deleting an unnecessary listing of Kalmia angustifolia since all species of Kalmia are regulated. The rule, which regulates interstate movement of restricted plant species, lists 105 hosts of P. ramorum. No new hosts for P. ramorum were reported in the U.S. in 2007.

Drought zaps Georgia green-industry profits
Georgia green-industry firms are losing an average of $37,516 a month because of the drought, according to a survey by Univ. of Ga. "In an industry with a median income of $800,000 per company, many companies won't be able to sustain losses of that magnitude," said Ellen Bauske, program coordinator at Ga. Urban Ag. Council. Surveyed companies included growers, retailers and landscapers; 168 business owners responded to the survey in November and December.

EPA grants critical uses for methyl bromide
U.S. EPA authorized methyl bromide critical-use exemptions for 2008, reported ANLA. The action authorizes 4.8 million kilograms of MBr for approved critical uses this year. Approved critical uses for nursery and floriculture crops include forest nursery seedlings in selected Southern, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest states; ornamentals, orchard nursery seedlings and roses in Calif.; ornamentals in Fla.; and perennial producers in Mich. Critical-use exemptions are permitted under the Montreal Protocol for circumstances where there are no technically and economically feasible alternatives to methyl bromide.

Novalis expands grower network
The Novalis consortium added 7 companies to grow for the Novalis Plants That Work by Color program: Armstrong Growers, Beds & Borders Inc., Carolina Nurseries, Peace Tree Farms, Sunbelt Greenhouses, Tanasacre Nursery and Wenke Greenhouses. Also, Bailey Nurseries is now part of the program. It will grow shrub and perennial selections as well as offering breeding. The first plant from Bailey is Diervilla sessilifolia 'LPDCPodaras' Cool Splash, which will be available in 2009-2010.

LBAM treatments begin in California communities
California and federal authorities are beginning treatment using pheromone-infused "twist ties" to combat light brown apple moth (LBAM) in Half Moon Bay and Pescadero, in San Mateo County, and San Rafael in Marin County. Twist ties are applied by ground crews to host plants, trees and fence posts in isolated, lightly infested areas. This approach creates mating disruption by dispersing an odorless moth pheromone in the infested area. This method is highly specific to the targeted moth population and is not harmful to other organisms. After 90 days, depending on whether traps in the area detect additional moths, the twist ties will be removed or replaced.

Bailey adds 3 plants to First Editions
Bailey Nurseries introduced First Editions, a premium collection of plants showcasing regional appeal. 3 new plants enter the collection this year: Firegold spirea, whose spring growth starts out soft yellow, transitioning to brilliant lemon-lime; Technito arborvitae, a more compact version of its parent, Techny; and Cabernet barberry, with an extremely dense, compact form that requires virtually no pruning.
