Canada declares infestation areas for Japanese beetle
Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) expanded its Japanese beetle infestation map. Infested areas now include all counties in the provinces of Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and all regional municipalities in the province of Quebec. Under Canadian regulations, plants and soil, which may harbor the pest, can be freely moved within a regulated area, but not outside of a regulated area without prior written permission from CFIA.

USDA extends census deadline
USDA is still accepting ag. census forms. Growers who did not return their forms by the original Feb. 4 due date will receive another copy in the mail. Growers may fill out the census online. Results are used for lobbying efforts, to support extension programs and to justify funding for the Floriculture and Nursery Crops Research Initiative. The census is conducted every 5 years and response is required by law. To find out if you're required to participate, call the Nat'l. Ag. Statistics Svc. at (888) 424-7828.

HRI accepts grant proposals
Hort. Research Institute (HRI) is accepting research applications for FY2009 until May 15. HRI is the research div. of ANLA. HRI-supported research ranges from automation to pest management. Past projects include tree guard evaluation, new landscape plant development, cover crop research, recycled water tests and bioplastics development.

More potent pesticides may be needed to fight LBAM
Calif. ag. leaders told Santa Cruz city and county officials last week that if aerial applications of pheromone to fight light brown apple moth (LBAM) are delayed, another, stronger insecticide may be necessary. "The risk of greater conventional pesticide is out there," Steve Lyle, spokesman for Calif. Dept. of Food and Ag., told San Jose Mercury News. A legal brief has been filed in response to a city and county lawsuit that demands an environmental review before more of the synthetic pheromone CheckMate LBAM-F is sprayed over the county. The state started spraying last November. The state argued in its brief that a delay in spraying the pheromone would allow more moths to reproduce. To kill them all, a stronger insecticide would be required.

Moore donates roses to TAMU
Ralph S. Moore, known as the father of the miniature rose, is donating all of his breeding stock to Texas A&M Univ.'s Hort. Sciences Dept. Moore, who turned 101 in Jan., is closing Sequoia Nursery in Visalia, Calif., at the end of April. His gift to A&M ensures continued research in miniature roses. Besides all remaining plants and breeding stock, Moore's gift includes 80 rose patents, a book collection and an unspecified cash contribution for program operation. Moore will help develop new varieties with David Byrne, chair holder of the Robert E. Basye Endowed Chair in Rose Breeding at A&M. "Texas A&M could become the world center of excellence in woody plant breeding and genetics," Byrne said. "We will be able to improve our research facilities and continue to develop miniature roses which are very compact and adaptable to home landscapes." Moore developed more than 300 miniature rose varieties.

Irrigation Assoc. starts nursery interest group
Irrigation Assoc. started a new common interest group (CIG) to provide a platform for nursery and floriculture stakeholders to discuss issues. This CIG is the IA's 8th and is comprised of industry leaders who meet regularly to define best practices for effective water management and to promote effective irrigation technology and practices. The CIG will meet in April to develop strategies and formalize leadership.
