Panel to decide Hines' NASDAQ future
A Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel will decide whether to delist Hines Hort. after a June 7 hearing. Hines Hort, headquartered in Irvine, Calif., has received 2 Nasdaq Staff Determination Letters, stating that it was not current on its Nasdaq filings. Early this month Hines Hort., one of the nation's only publicly owned nursery producers, informed an audit committee that previously issued financial statements contained errors. These reports were for various quarters from 2004 to 2006.
ANLA urges immigration grass roots
ANLA is urging green-industry members to contact representatives in Washington, D.C., to urge inclusion of AgJOBS wording in the immigration reform package being debated in the Capitol. AgJOBS proposals would reform the H-2A program and allow current undocumented immigrants to earn legal status after years of agricultural work. Senators announced that a vote would not be taken on the immigration reform package before Memorial Day, as was hoped when the package was first announced.
ANLA announces Trek de Hort
Bob Dolibois, ANLA exec. v.p., plans to climb Mount Kilimanjaro this summer in Tanzania, Africa. Dolibois and his wife Susie are making the trek to raise funds for the Horticultural Research Institute. Dubbed "Trek de Hort," it's in recognition of Gordon Bailey Jr.'s Tour de Hort, a cross-country bicycle trip he took from 1999-2003, which raised $1.25 million for green-industry research. HRI is accepting donations to support Trek de Hort. "Because of the vertical distance from bottom to top [of Mount Kilimanjaro], one of the most remarkable features of this trek is the horticultural range and variety of flora," Dolibois said. "I'll take lots of pictures, but our members will have to identify the plants. Latin names only, of course."

An infested street tree was also found in Worthington, the first discovery of EAB in that portion of Franklin County. Since its first discovery in Ohio in 2003, the pest has been found in 27 counties in the state. The quarantine regulates movement of ash materials including nursery stock and firewood.
North Carolina expands fire ant quarantine
N.C. Dept. of Ag. and Consumer Services expanded the imported fire ant quarantine to include all of Clay, Cherokee and Edgecombe counties and a portion of Granville County. The quarantine now includes all or portions of 61 North Carolina counties. Permits are required to move nursery stock from the quarantine area. "Failure to obtain the needed inspections and certifications may result in the issuance of a stop-gap notice and rejection or destruction of the regulated article," said Gene Cross, NCDACS Plant Industry Division director.
