The nursery buys liners only from growers who are certified clean, but the Greenes have always feared an outbreak of P. ramorum. This disease would bring a regulatory nightmare as well as a stigma.

You can keep other pest and disease problems quiet, but not P. ramorum. Everybody would hear about it. The nursery would be branded for years.

Susan took some leaf samples, put them in plastic bags and brought them back to the office. She did an Internet search for P. ramorum symptoms on rhododendron and quickly had some images for comparison.

The photos on her computer screen looked eerily similar to the leaves in the plastic bags.
