There are many types of irrigation systems, but most involve:
  • A water source.

  • A pumping system.

  • A delivery mechanism (sprinkler head, emitter, flood system, etc.).

As a water source, groundwater is common, as is surface water such as a river or lake. Today, many nurseries have constructed retention ponds to collect rain and runoff so it can be reapplied. Retention ponds often become the primary source of irrigation water and are usually supplemented with well or surface water only when they run low.
