Digging season at a nursery used to be fairly straightforward. Hordes of people would head out into the fields with shovels, burlap and nails and get the job done.

Now growers have tons of options. Mechanical spades in multiple styles -- conical, rounded, truncated -- are available. A wide range of basket styles can be used to help keep root balls secured tightly. And, of course, there are growers who dig and containerize their field-grown stock.
