Q. What instruments do you recommend to monitor pH, EC and fertility in the greenhouse? Our current equipment is about worn out, and we are interested in your recommendation for updating. Is there anything that will work out in the field that is reasonably accurate and affordable? We are a small grower of annuals and perennials. Thanks for your help! -- Carole

A. There are many different devices that are used for measuring pH and EC in the greenhouse.

The choice should really depend on a couple of factors.

First, the device should be easy to use, reliable and sturdy.

Second, it should be relatively inexpensive. I say "relatively" because cheap instruments don't last and you end up replacing them often, so in a long run you are better off with the higher-priced models.

I always recommend Myron or Agri-meter. It does both pH and EC measurements (model AG-6). It can be purchased from Hummert (check their website www.hummert.com, look for pH and EC testing equipment). We use these in our extension work and I know of many growers that have purchased them in the past and are very happy with them.

You need to buy calibration solutions for pH and EC because your meter (any meter) is as good as its calibration. Look for pH Buffer solutions and Conductivity solution.

Hummert also carry a number of cheaper models of pH and EC meters, like pH pens, and TDS testers (measures Total Dissolved Solids).

If this one is a bit too expensive, then you can look at Milwakee Instruments' website, www.miltesterusa.com. They have several different models, either pH or EC meter separate, or combined in one meter. Again, calibration solutions should be purchased.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any further questions,
