Here are a few of the Schmidt introductions that have given the nursery a reputation for producing outstanding shade and flowering trees:

Big Cis plum, Prunus x cistena 'Schmidtcis.' A cistena sport, it has a fast growth rate and large leaves, with the same beautiful pink, fragrant flowers as its parent.

Mt. St. Helens plum, Prunus 'Frankthrees.' A small plum, reaching only 20 feet in height and spread, it survives extremes in climate and leafs out early. Rich, deep-purple leaf color is held long into the summer.

Skyrocket oak, a Quercus robur 'Fastigiata.' Uniformly narrow shape, useful for narrow street plantings.

Forest Green oak, Q. frainetto 'Schmidt.' An upright oak with a strong central leader. Has glossy, deep-green foliage and a strong, symmetrical shape.

Golden Raindrops crabapple, Malus transitoria 'Schmidtcutleaf.' Excellent resistance to most diseases, the 20-foot, white-flowering specimen has unusual fine-textured, cut-leaf foliage and tiny, golden-yellow fruit.

Easy Street maple, Acer platanoides 'Ezestre.' Pyramidal in form, this bud sport of 'Columnare' matures to a street-tree shape and reaches 40 feet in height.

Red Sunset maple, A. rubrum 'Franksred.' The most highly rated and reliable of the red maple cultivars, developed by J. Frank Schmidt Jr. A vigorous tree with strong and symmetrical branching; lustrous foliage that is green in summer turning to brilliant shades of red and orange-red in fall. Schmidt discovered it in a group of seedlings in the late 1940s and introduced it to the trade in 1966.

Norwegian Sunset maple, A. truncatum x A. platanoides 'Keithsform.' Oval-shaped tree with yellow-orange to red fall color. Reaches 35 feet in height.

Pacific Sunset maple, A. truncatum x A. platanoides 'Warrenred.' Outstanding glossy summer foliage turns to tints of yellow, red and orange in the fall. Branch structure is a little finer-textured and more spreading than Norwegian Sunset.

Red Cascade mountain ash, Sorbus americana 'Dwarfcrown.' Selected from a group of seedlings by J. Frank Schmidt Jr. due to its compact size and symmetrical growth habit and seasonal interest. Features include clusters of white flowers in spring, lustrous, green summer foliage, orange-red fruit and yellow-orange fall color. Matures to about 16 feet with a spread of about 8 feet. Hardy to Zone 3.
