Schmidt was selected as the NMPRO 1997 Nursery Grower of the Year by a panel of five of his industry peers. They were asked to submit names of candidates, then they voted on those who received the most nominations.

Members of the panel were:

  • Dale Deppe of Spring Meadow Nursery Co., Grand Haven, Mich.

  • Gordon Bailey Jr. of Bailey Nurseries Inc., St. Paul, Minn.

  • Janet Rademacher of Mountain States Nursery, Glendale, Ariz.

  • Jack Long of J&L Nursery Co., Silverton, Ore.

  • Bill Reese of Greenbriar Nurseries Inc., Ocala, Fla.

    • The criteria for selection were:

  • Must be a grower, male or female.

  • Industry involvement essential.

  • Must have made some recent outstanding contribution.

  • Must be innovative: growing, breeding, propagation, marketing, personnel, company turnaround or other recognized feat.

  • Still living.
