Zinnia

Zinnias are annuals that flower from early summer through the first frost. Zinnia elegans features dwarf, medium and tall varieties and are available in almost any color, except blue. Z. angustifolia has more narrow foliage and smaller, single flowers.

Zinnia breeding has led to varieties that are powdery mildew resistant, such as the Profusion series, which has increased its use as a bedding plant, said Bob Croft, technical manager of product development at Sakata Seed America.

Zinnias are ideal for landscape plants or for use in color bowls.

Breeders and growers rated zinnias as #12 when we asked them for up-and-coming plants for the industry.
