Tour Time -- 2003 New Varieties

Three members were added to Floranova’s Sizzler series. Burgundy Halo has a light burgundy-pink calyx with rose flower tubes. Burgundy Stripe has a purple-burgundy calyx and flower spikes with white stripes. Red Stripe Improved (red and white striped calyx and flower spikes) holds its color much better in the garden.

Ball Seed’s Empire II series contains dwarf Salvia splendens that flower consistently across all six colors. Plants are dark-leafed with medium-early spikes. They finish slightly later than the original. Colors are: Burgundy, Lilac, Purple, Red, Salmon and White (along with a Mix).

Goldsmith Seeds’ new S. splendens Picante series is uniform for timing, habit and flower form. Plants produce numerous, long-lasting, full, bushy spikes. Colors are: Light Purple, Salmon and Scarlet.

Goldsmith also added Plum to the Salsa series.

Sanvitalia

‘Cuzco Yellow’ was bred by S&G Flowers and is available through EuroAmerican. Plants are very floriferous with pale, lemon-hued petals that surround a lime-green eye. Foliage has a semi-mounding habit.

Scaevola

Whirlwind White

Proven Winners’ Whirlwind White is a free-flowering, vigorous cultivar with medium-sized, white flowers. Plants are heat and drought tolerant. It was bred by S&G Flowers.

Ecke’s ‘White Fan’ is a sister plant to ‘Purple Fan.’ Both plants have the same habit and will flower in spring. ‘Sparkling Fan’ has bicolor white flowers with bluish stripes. It is more mounded, but with similar flower size.

‘Royal Pink’ is similar to ‘Jacob’s White’ in flower and plant size. Both flower in summer.

Blue Ocean and Blue Haze are both from Danziger. Blue Ocean has exceptionally large, dark-purple flowers that do not have an eye. It flowers early and abundantly. Blue Haze has a compact habit and large, purple flowers with yellow eyes.

Schizanthus

S&G Flowers’ new F1-hybrid Treasure Trove series has a uniform flowering time and well-branched, free-flowering plants. The series is less daylight sensitive as well. Colors are: Lilac, Lilac Bicolor, Pure Scarlet Shades, Pure White and Rose Bicolor.

Silene

‘Celina,’ from Benary Seeds, has 6- to 10-inch flowers covered with 3/4-inch, deep-rose flowers. Plants have attractive seed pods and deep-bronze foliage when grown cool.

Snapdragon (Antirrhinum)

Goldsmith Plants’ new Sultan trailing snapdragon series was bred to take the place of the Dragon series. Plants are earlier than other snaps, and they have a mounding habit that covers plants with flowers. Plants were bred for spring-summer sales. Colors are: Bronze, Lavender, Light Pink, Light Yellow, Purple, Red, Red & Yellow, Rose, White and Yellow.

The Sachmo Mixture has open, trumpet-throated varieties and is from FSH Flecke-Saaten-Handel GmbH. Flowers can be used as bedding plants or for cuts. Colors in the mix range from cream to pink, deep rose, red and bronze-orange shades.

Ecke’s new trailing Crocodile series replaces its Chandelier series. Plants have large, vibrant flowers and are perfect for the cool season. Colors are: White, Orange and Yellow, Primrose Vein, Pink Bicolor, Rose and Yellow, Lilac, Deep Pink and Yellow.

S&G Flowers has two more snapdragons.

Montego Sunset is a mixture of yellow, bronze and rosy-scarlet flowers.

‘Crown Lilac Bicolor’ has dark lilac and blush bicolor flowers.

Sweet pea

Three colors were added to Bodger Seeds’ Winter Elegance series: Deep Red, Burgundy and Mid Blue.

Torenia

Violet Moon

Rose and Violet are members of Danziger’s Moon series. Rose has a large amount of miniature flowers with compact, nicely branched plants. It will flower early in low-light density, making it an ideal choice for spring sales. Violet has good branching and a semi-upright habit.

‘Summer Wave Large Amethyst’ has very large purple flowers with a lighter shaded throat. Foliage is dark, rich green. ‘Summer Wave Large White/Pink’ has very large, pink and purple flowers with white. They were bred by Suntory and are available from Jackson & Perkins.

Trachelium

PanAmerican’s Devotion series upgraded series members Blue Improved, Purple Improved and White Improved for better timing and to be more dwarf. New Burgundy fits well with the improvements.
