Homemade computer tracking

Several members of the Jacobson family are very computer literate, including Bruce Jacobson. The family has created several computer programs with spreadsheet software to track plant inventories and sales. By creating the systems themselves, the Jacobsons ensure the programs are specific to their needs.

Plant tracking is done with Microsoft Access software. It logs when plants enter an area of a greenhouse, when they are moved and what quantities are in different locations.

The software improves disease and insect control since growers can identify where a particular problem originated. It also speeds shipping because employees can go directly to where plants are located to pull orders.

Sales information is on Microsoft Excel software. With it, the company can track customer purchases during different times of the year. If customers made a large order at a specific time, they can be contacted the next year about making a repeat order of the same size or changing the amount.
