‘Eureka Bronze Leaf Rose’ begonia was a winner in Florida, Illinois and Ontario.

‘Melanie’ melampodium performed well in Florida.

‘Purple Majesty’ pennisetum received accolades in Florida, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Maine and Oklahoma.

Unlike last year, trial gardens at the University of Florida’s Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Bradenton, Fla., got a break from the drought, although there wasn’t record rainfall, said Richard Kelly, variety trials coordinator. Rainfall was below average in March, April and May, while June’s precipitation was normal. But by mid-July, almost 7 inches had fallen.

Cabbage webworm infested cleome. The larvae bore into the stems, virtually shutting down the flowering, Kelly said. A stinkbug (Eusachistus quadrator) was found in large numbers on impatiens. But no feeding symptoms were seen on the flowers directly related to the pest.
