Wet spring conditions at Missouri Botanical Garden’s trials caused vinca to develop yellow leaves, but symptoms disappeared when rains diminished, said supervisor June Hutson. Japanese beetles attacked many plants throughout the gardens, but none of the trial plants was affected, she said.

Dianthus: ‘Melody Pink’ and ‘Corona Cherry Magic.’

Gaillardia pulchella: ‘Sundance Bicolor.’

Perilla: ‘Magilla.’

Rudbeckia: ‘Cherokee Sunset.’

Vinca: ‘Victory Cranberry’ and ‘Victory Deep Apricot.’

Powell Gardens, Kingsville

Plants at Powell Gardens experienced high temperatures to above 100F and blister beetles, said horticulturist David Bird. One pest of sorts is there for a reason. The gardens plant host material for black swallowtails in anticipation of the garden’s Butterfly Festival.

Ipomoea batatas: ‘Margarita,’ ‘Ace of Spades.’

Ornamental cotton.

Salvia: ‘Lady in Red.’

Scaevola: ‘Outback Blue Fan.’
