Rain ruled the day through spring and early summer at Ohio State University Cooperative Extension’s trials in Springfield. It rained steady from mid-March through mid-June, but the sun came out long enough to plant “under good soil conditions,” said Pamela Bennett, horticulture extension agent. “We had 18 inches of rain from mid-April to mid-June. But from mid-June to mid-July, it was dry with less than 1 inch of rain.” Plants received 1 inch of supplemental irrigation per week.

Japanese beetles were severe in the area, but did not affect trial plants. Zinnias were infected with leaf spot and there was some heat stress on some of the intolerant species, Bennett said.
