‘Zinnita White’ zinnia is a petite variety.

‘Sundance Bicolor’ gaillardia performed well throughout the growing season in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma State University trials were spared grasshopper invasions, unlike other gardens in the area, said Haldor Howard, greenhouses and gardens manager.

“We had some aphids, spider mites and phytophthora,” Howard said. Another fortune for the gardens was the weather. “Late May and June were cooler than average. There was some surprising and much-welcomed rain in early July. Overall, the season was less taxing than might have been expected,” he said. As a result, many of the entries are holding up much better and longer into the season, he said.
