A rare hailstorm hit the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens June 17, but did minimal damage to some of the annuals, said Anne Marie Van Nest, instructor at the gardens’ School of Horticulture. Garden staff eradicated a small, contained pythium problem on geraniums by removing infected plants and the surrounding soil, Van Nest said. The staff also dealt with the annual infestation of Japanese beetles, but they’re not causing considerable damage, she said.
