Monrovia Growers feels strongly about
its quality and reputation -- so much so that the company slaps its name on the
sides of its containers. It advertises and promotes the Monrovia brand as
superior to consumers and the trade.
This year the company took a
huge hit when Phytophthora ramorum, the sudden oak death pathogen, was
found at the company’s Azusa, Calif., growing facility. Quarantines were issued
and news stories about the incident were published nationwide.
While the event could have led to the company’s downfall,
decisive action by corporate leaders lessened the blow. With chief executive
officer Richard VanLandingham’s leadership, Monrovia assured that its brand and
reputation are safe.
For taking these actions and steering Monrovia toward
future prosperity, VanLandingham was named the 2004 NMPRO Nursery
Grower of the Year.
