Crime report

Stunted growth and wilted plants are outward signs of Pythium. But the investigation must go deeper. The disease first causes dark-colored, mushy roots.

Criminal history

Pythium can attack virtually any plant, but it often favors geraniums, poinsettias and lilies.

This fungal pathogen can be introduced into a greenhouse through starter material or other prefinished plant material. It also can survive in containers and on benches or walkways.

Pythium attacks in wet conditions caused by poor soil drainage or excess irrigation.
