Faster than a speeding bullet...

Today’s growers are like Superman, overcoming what at times seem to be insurmountable challenges. The list grows daily: recover from destructive weather; identify and control domestic and imported diseases and insects; minimize shrinking profit margins; comply with federal, state and local regulations; recruit and retain employees; hold down rising costs. Any of these, if not handled properly and in a timely manner, could be kryptonite for your business.

Welcome to the new GMPRO - appearing in your mailbox in early May. You knew something was different the minute you saw the cover. For our 25th anniversary issue cover, we chose to display a collection of covers spanning the 25 years that GMPRO and its predecessor, Greenhouse Manager, have served the floriculture industry.

We will continue to bring you cover stories featuring growing operations with distinct production, marketing or management styles and systems.

GMPRO’s history goes back much further than 25 years. Company founder Aaron Smith began publishing the weekly Southern Florist magazine in 1915, which became Southern Florist & Nurseryman in 1922. That was 16 years before the first Superman comic made it into print in 1938.

More colorful, more timely

The magazine is now full color from cover to cover. This will brighten up all of the sections of the magazine. Page-top colored banners identify topics of feature stories and regular monthly departments.

Here are some highlights of the changes.

* greEn-MAIL. You’re already familiar with our highly read weekly e-mail newsletter, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It was the first e-mail newsletter to bring subscribers news from around the industry. (If you don't already get the greEn-MAIL, subscribe here. It's free!) Now, you can read late-breaking news on this easy-to-find page in the magazine, as well.

* PRO Pulse. We’ve combined the former Crop Updates and Industry Insights sections into one comprehensive, easy-to-read section. Included in Pro Pulse is Ideas at Work, in which an industry member shares success with a process or technique for production, pest management or business management.

* PRO Chat. The monthly Q&A article featuring an industry personality is now a faster read and will appear bimonthly. It will rotate with the new Pro Picks, which gives growers a chance to talk about products they find valuable in their own businesses. Look for the first installment in June.

* PRO Solutions. These monthly, solution-based columns are written by industry specialists who are tops in their fields. They cover greenhouse operation systems, marketing, production issues and more.

* PRO Health. Each month, this expanded section will focus on a particular insect or disease, along with new control products and news related to seasonal outbreaks and control tips.

Up, up and away

The GMPRO staff knows your time is valuable. We’re certain the changes we’ve implemented will provide a comprehensive, timely, easy-to-read source that enables you to better operate your business. Let us know what you think about the redesigned GMPRO, and how we can make it better and more useful for you.
